American Polymer Achieves Industry’s Most Rigorous Performance Assessment

Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) taps American Polymer as the only company to join its preferred vendor list; long-term protection, fast, environmentally friendly clean-up, and history of performance prove to be essential elements

LAS VEGAS, May 26, 2006—American Polymer, the leader in graffiti abatement, today announced that it has been selected by the Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) as its authorized graffiti abatement provider.  American Polymer was the only graffiti abatement provider—out of 11 companies tested--to pass NDOT’s stringent performance test.

Successful completion of NDOT’s evaluation meets the purchasing criteria of many public sector organizations and further underscores American Polymer’s commitment to performance and innovation.

“This affirms American Polymer’s position as a leader in the graffiti abatement industry and illustrates our competitive advantage in overall permanent long-term graffiti protection, and fast, environmentally friendly clean-up,” said Michael Macris, President of American Polymer.

The NDOT performance evaluation assesses products against an extensive list of criteria, including the following:

ease of application—product shall provide error-free jobsite mixing and application.

ease of removal —removal product shall facilitate graffiti removal through application and light agitation of the affected area with an artificial bristle brush followed by low pressure water rinse to achieve 100% graffiti removal with no ghosting, staining or shadowing; graffiti removal should provide an effective use of time for large areas, with modest physical effort.

environmental impact—graffiti removal product must be biodegradable with a  pH of 7 to 8.5, nonflammable, and in compliance with all environmental regulations.  In addition to meeting all existing EPA and OSHA requirements, the application and removal agents should be classified as one or lower in all four classes of the Hazardous Materials Identification System.  Runoff and breakdown from the product should have no adverse effects on humans, plants or animals. Product shall not require special containment or disposal procedures.

safe removal--coating shall allow total removal of all types of paints and graffiti materials from treated surfaces without damage to the coating or substrate;  the cleaning process shall not damage color, stain or substrate, regardless of removal product used by NDOT.

durability of product—graffiti resistant coating shall withstand 120 cleanings over the same area without measurable deterioration; coating shall not require re-application during a period of ten years after application.

thorough graffiti removal—upon graffiti removal, there shall be no ghosting, staining, shadowing, or evidence of graffiti, and the coating shall show no signs of deterioration or change of appearance.

comparison against existing graffiti removal methods—graffiti abatement solution must compare favorably with existing removal methods (e.g. paint over graffiti).  Product must be comparable in time, cost, and convenience.

sheen of finish product—graffiti resistant coating shall be a specially formulated matte finish.

non-sacrificial protection--graffiti resistant coating must provide non-sacrificial graffiti protection and waterproofing. Coating shall be permanent, water-clear, non-yellowing with added chemical and abrasion resistance for painted or stained surfaces, and porous cementitious surfaces.

product compatibility -- graffiti resistant coating must be compatible with applied paint and stain products.

history of exceptional service--graffiti abatement vendor must have a proven history of satisfactory service characteristics without a non-uniform change in color.

shelf life--graffiti abatement product must have a minimum of 12 months shelf life.

The NDOT labs extensively tested the American Polymer GSS, which received excellent scores in all assessment areas.
